Lakewood Center is located in the heart of the city of Lakewood at the intersection of Del Amo and Lakewood Boulevards. JCPenney, Macy’s, Mervyn’s, Robinsons-May and TARGET anchor Lakewood Center. TARGET opened on October 12, 2003. An expansion in 2000-2001 brought about over 300,000 square feet of new stores, a food court and a Macy’s and Mervyn’s store. Considered the first successful adaptive re-use project in the country, was originally a chocolate factory established by Domenico “Domingo” Ghirardelli. The chocolate manufacturing operation was sold and transferred to San Leandro in the 1960s.
